A lot of older RPGs began life as zines, or as rough small print releases. But with modern technology, the rise of crowdfunding websites has made it possible for games to be produced by smaller, more independent studios with the level of polish we&#8217;re used to seeing from the larger lights in the industry.<\/p>\n<p>This is awesome and delightful. So what I&#8217;m going to do here is mention a few of these games and game products that are currently or recently going through their crowdfunding phases. So to encapsulate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/squidinkgames\/smork-borg-ttrpg\"><em>Smork Borg<\/em><\/a> for you, I would simply say it&#8217;s a game where you play as a very thinly veiled parody of a Smurf (one legally distinct, of course) if the whole thing was being created by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Karl_Edward_Wagner\">Karl Edward Wagner<\/a> on peyote.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know what else I could say that would possibly be more compelling than to simply say you can play a murderous Smurf in a twisted, grimdark fantasy gorefest of a setting. Either that&#8217;s your thing, or you should probably stay away. The only way I could be more excited for this book would be if it had\u00a0<em>Inostrancevia<\/em> in it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-186749\" src=\"https:\/\/blizzardwatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/PlanetoftheApesTTRPG.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"675\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blizzardwatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/PlanetoftheApesTTRPG.png 675w, https:\/\/blizzardwatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/PlanetoftheApesTTRPG-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/blizzardwatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/PlanetoftheApesTTRPG-200x113.png 200w, https:\/\/blizzardwatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/PlanetoftheApesTTRPG-80x45.png 80w, https:\/\/blizzardwatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/PlanetoftheApesTTRPG-398x224.png 398w, https:\/\/blizzardwatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/PlanetoftheApesTTRPG-620x350.png 620w, https:\/\/blizzardwatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/PlanetoftheApesTTRPG-340x191.png 340w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Planet of the Apes<\/h2>\n<p>Honestly, I&#8217;m only a middling fan of the\u00a0<em>Planet of the Apes<\/em> franchise &#8212; although the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Planet_of_the_Apes_(novel)\">original novel<\/a> does have a place in my heart &#8212; but the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/magneticpressplay\/the-official-planet-of-the-apes-role-playing-game\">Official <em>Planet of the Apes<\/em> RPG<\/a> has my attention for a variety of reasons.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It&#8217;s built on the old\u00a0<em>D6<\/em> system originally designed for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Star_Wars:_The_Roleplaying_Game\">West End Games&#8217;\u00a0<\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Star_Wars:_The_Roleplaying_Game\">Star Wars The Roleplaying Game<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em>This means I could theoretically have Jedi show up and chop up talking Apes with their Lightsabers. I am down for this.<\/li>\n<li>They specifically promise that this game was made by humans, not AI\u00a0<em>or<\/em> Apes. I appreciate this. AI has become a blight on creative pursuits and I don&#8217;t want any damn dirty Apes making my RPGs.<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s a planet where Apes evolved from Men. It&#8217;s primarily the work of a single creator, Natasja van Gestel. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natasjavangestel.com\/\">She seems very cool<\/a> and I can&#8217;t ever feel bad promoting an individual creator&#8217;s work in a time like the times we have.<\/p>\n<p>And also,\u00a0<em>Tomb of the Dead God<\/em> feels like a module I&#8217;d have picked up and run way back in the day, with touches of\u00a0<em>The Lost City<\/em>, stories like\u00a0<em>The Heritage of Hastur<\/em> or the old <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_King_in_Yellow\"><em>King in Yellow<\/em><\/a> tales of Robert W. Chambers. I simply find it to be a delightful concept and I&#8217;m very curious where Natasja is going to take it. The art is gorgeous, by the way, a very unique and lovely style that makes the preview images stand out.<\/p>\n<p>While I regretfully bring my nerding out to a close, I have to note that the TTRPG hobby is getting more diverse, and more and more the creators are capable of using crowdfunding to get their vision out without corporations stepping on what they can make.
